The Milk Paint we are using at the Brooklyn Green Show House has three ingredients:
milk protein
lime
clay
That’s it! Three ingredients!
Try to find out the ingredients of a chemical paint. First you will be hard pressed to get the list and if you do you will see it has many ingredients, most of them with long technical names hinting to petroleum and other harmful, synthetic origins.
And people put that crap on their walls???
For coloring the milk paint has earth pigments (ochre, umber, iron oxide, lampblack…). Again, simple names for a simple source. These are the same pigments that cave dwellers painted with.
Anyone still painting with chemical paints needs to get out of the future and return to the cave dwelling era. Get back to your roots. Our 1950’s obsession with man made synthetic perfection wasn’t even healthy 60 years ago. Now we have scientific and medical proof that our little foray into playing chemistry caused lots of harm.
Time to stop worshiping the future and being a little more respectful of the past, as in the way back past. Not with everything (human sacrifice for example) but certainly with some building techniques.
In the photo below we are applying Milk Paint to our sheet rock and stucco walls (sheet rock on left, stucco on right). The great thing about Milk Paint is you can control the whole process of thickness and color depending on the texture and porosity of the wall. just add water and color as you wish. In this case we had two very different walls beside each other but you can’t tell them apart after applying milk paint.
