Pex Tubing and NYC Code

I was lamenting today about how NYC Code does not allow pex tubing for residential water. You can’t even use it to run water to the toilet. It would save so much money to use pex. The Europeans have been doing it for years.

So why does NYC code not allow it?

Are they behind the times? Concerned about the pex tubing leaching chemicals? Is there a conspiracy?

My plumber’s answer: RATS!

He says that NYC does not allow Pex plastic tubes because rats can chew through it and cause all sorts of flooding issues…..apparently plastic romex electric cable (legal everywhere but NYC) is not code for the same reason.

Rats….

Only in NY.

Even if that is the reason I still think it is stupid not to allow it in residential Brooklyn. How many rats are in your house? Not that many I suspect. I’m willing to take the risk.
